90,000 New York Hotel Rooms
The city of New York expects to reach a new milestone by the end of 2011: 90,000 hotel rooms. This count extends beyond Manhattan, covering all of the city's boroughs. The fastest growing area recently is Long Island City, in Queens just across the East River from Manhattan. 17 hotels with 1,500 rooms are currently open in Long Island City, with another five hotels and 650 rooms on the way. Many are within a block or two of a subway station, making them a slightly cheaper option with good access to the city.
Cruise Critic Editors' Picks Awards
The 2011 Cruise Critic Editors' Picks awards were announced on November 15. Disney Cruise Line's Disney Dream won "Best New Ship" and "Best Inside Cabins." Best for luxury are Seabourn's Odyssey class ships. Royal Caribbean won Best for Families, and its Oasis and Allure ships won Best for Entertainment. Carnival Cruise Line won Best Value for Money. New Orleans was selected Best US Cruise Port.
This Week's New (or Improved) Hotels
The Fairmont Mayakoba Riviera Maya (in the Playa del Carmen area just south of Cancun, Mexico) is experimenting with a "cruise style" food option. Pay a flat fee and eat as much as you want, wherever you want (with some restrictions, of course).
Calling itself a "luxury boutique" hotel, the Renaissance Atlanta Midtown is now open on the north side of downtown Atlanta. Formerly the Hotel Palomar, the new 4-star Renaissance has 287 guest rooms and 17 suites, the 4,445 square foot High Ballroom and a 442 gallon salt water aquarium in the lobby.
